How to find stories in your business: 3 tips for guaranteed PR exposure
Many business owners I speak with are really into the idea of getting themselves or their business featured in the media, in online publications or on podcasts, but have A BIG PROBLEM.
They can’t identify what a good story looks like or even where to find it.
Fortunately, it's not as hard as you might think to find these sellable stories.
You just need to know where to look in your business and have a clear understanding of how to determine newsworthiness.
Later in the episode I’ll also be sharing my Sellable StoryFinder Template so you can get started immediately.
If that all sounds good to you, keep listening.

Since you’re listening to this podcast, it’s safe to assume you have a good idea of how valuable free publicity is. The kind you get when your story is featured in the media, in online publications, in podcasts and in videos.
This media or public relations coverage is invaluable, not just from the thousands of dollars of free publicity you get, but also because it gives you credibility that paid advertising can’t buy.
It’s a third-party endorsement, and people believe it far more than what you claim in your social media ads or on your website.
But how do you get these elusive opportunities? Well, that’s where I can help.
As a former television news journalist and producer for more than 15 years, I have a deep understanding of what makes a good story, and I’m here to help you find more of them in your business.
So, let’s get started finding - what I like to call - your sellable stories.
Tip number 1: Find stories in your products and services
There’s so much opportunity to tell great stories through what you do and what you sell.
Ask yourself the following questions.
Firstly, What's different about what you're offering?
Next you need to look at the trends.
Now think about evergreen opportunites.
Finally, think about your business’s acomplishments?
Tip number 2: Find stories in you and your people
This is where you look at yourself as a founder, owner, or CEO and your employees.
To start with, examine your founder's story.
Now, examine your business structure.
shoestring? The money story behind your business is often very newsworthy.
Finally, Examine your employees.
Tip number 3: Find stories in your customers
Customer stories are the perfect way to share the impact we’re having on those we help through our business.
Firstly, Review how people use your product or service.
Next, Review how people talk about your product or service.
And finally, Review industry-wide trends relating to how people use your product or service.
So to recap:
Tip 1: Find stories in your products and services
Tip 2: Find stories in you and your people
Tip 3: Find stories in your customers
As you can see there are so many places to search for stories within your business. How exciting is that!
Remember though, when you’re looking for these stories, you really do need to keep in mind the BIG BIG QUESTION: why should anyone care?
Also make sure you refer back to the 8 news values, so you can determine what stories will be considered newsworthy.
This is super important. So if you missed the podcast where I explain all of this in detail, check out Episode 12 - What makes a newsworthy story?
